Good morning!!! Fat Tuesday….I don’t know what else to say about it. Sometimes, when artists redo songs, I guess for the sake of respecting the original, they’ll leave the piece in tact for the most part. This is how I feel about todays’ #songwars. The Jones Girls: Brenda, Shirley, and Valorie actual sisters from Detroit oddly(since they were Motown born and raised) , made their mark on Philadelphia International Records. The Jones Girls served as background singers for Teddy Pendergrass and Aretha Franklin among others. In 1979, the dropped their biggest sing ‘You Gonna Make Me Love Somebody Else’ just barley penetrationg the top 40 but, it’s the B-side of this record that contends in #songwars. It’s not really uncommon for a remake to outperform an original on the charts but, while you’d be hard pressed to find a chart that mentions The Jones Girls version of ‘Who Can I Run To’, in 1995 Atlantas’ Xscape took the song to #1 on the RnB charts. My opinion is that they really didn’t do much to make the song theirs….from the first notes, sounds a lot like the original…timing, I guess, is everything. As with many songs, I’m a fan of the original more than the Xscape version…which I still think is dope. Anyway, pour another cup and turn the radio up and join me for #songwars at 9…..yup.
