#summanites

What’s good? I love summer, especially the warm nights that come with it.  As a fan of R&B, I feel like some cuts are just made for warm evenings either accompanied or in solitude. This playlist started as one that I was gonna be my driving at night soundtrack.  It went from a solo list to this, that I’m sharing with you. Enjoy Yo.

Come As You Are – TOBi & Baby Rose.  Keepin’ it a buck, first time I heard this I thought it was a new Anderson.Paak cut. Toronto bred TOBi and Baby Rose (I swear I like her more every time I hear her) deliver a laid back R&B vibe just right for mid summer rides.

About Him – Alex Isley. Where was I in 2013 that made me miss this jam?! Ernie has to be proud! A real deal love song, sounds like a warm Saturday evening.

Black Ice Cream – Raheem DeVaughn. From 2015, this joint still knocks. BIC checks in at seven minutes, every second pleases. DeVaughn is R&B to the core, it shows here.

Tragic – Jazmine Sullivan. A short six months since the release of her last album Heaux Tales Jazmine is back with new music. Adopting California congresswoman Maxine Waters’ catch phrase ‘reclaiming my time’ Sullivan soulfully yet mercilessly roasts … I’m guessing a former lovers skillset. This is a conversation among women that sends the fellas in the opposite direction. It knocks though.

Messy Love – Nao. I liked her 2018 cut Make It Out Alive. The nasally sound doesn’t usually move me but, here it works. The story is good, the track is good, the vocals are good.

Tidal Wave – Njomza & Ari Lennox. Full disclosure, this cut is here because of Ari. Don’t get me wrong, the song would knock with just Njomza, Ari just makes me put it on repeat.  I needed this, especially after Ari’s announcement that she’s in no hurry to release new music.

We Made It – H.E.R. Did you know that Michael Jackson’s song It’s The Falling In Love was a cover?  Check this out.  It’s (the original) sampled here and that’s my 3rd favorite thing about this cut. My second is she sings a celebratory jam that’s lyrically stout enough for Kendrick Lamar to spit. All of that makes this cut knock but, my absolute favorite thing about this jayum is the hypnotic guitar solo that shows up 3 minutes and 19 seconds in. Repeat worthy af.

Get To You – Trevor Jackson. In 2018 this dude was the star in a decent remake of Superfly. 2021 sees him doin too much to get the attention of an ex. I’m not judging, we’ve all been there. Trevor is pulling off the actor/singer thing exceptionally.

Aura – Mariah The Scientist. Best sample use of Make Me Say It Again  since Naughty By Nature. Break up song with hope, it knocks.

Type of Day – BJ The Chicago Kid f Eric Bellinger.  The type of day we hope every Saturday turns into. Issa vibe.

Come To My Room – Jesse Boykins III.  From 2008, Classic R&B formula done well.

Let these 11 knock on a warm summer evening, here.
